Introducing Katie Twigg

A couple of weeks ago an unexpected padded envelope arrived from a greeting card company we’d never heard of. With a return address in Virginia, the outer envelope gave no clues about its contents. Inside was an exquisite treasure.
Who can resist an artist who introduces herself with information packaged like this:
We looked inside this beautiful bundle and were smitten. We checked out her website, confirmed the green-ness of her paper source, and made a decision.
Katie Twigg’s lovely greeting cards arrived in our Stationery department this week, and they’re keeping us smiling.
What isn’t portrayed in the images here is that each card has a tiny bit of glitter, with maybe a rhinestone or two, that infuses the cards with a magical charm. The tiara becomes spectacular, the mouse believes you’re going to feel better soon, the cake has the best pink frosting you can imagine.
Katie Twigg cards are perfect for when you need to send a thoughtful note… with a bit of sparkle.

We just received our first order from Orange Twist, a line of greeting cards screenprinted by hand in Seattle.
The folks at Orange Twist use 100% post-consumer recycled paper products for all white cards and all envelopes. Individual cards are packaged in biodegradable protective sleeves made from plants. They also use non-toxic, water-based ink, reclaim screens, and reuse and recycle office and packing materials.
The cards are lovely, charming, silly, and poignant. We love their bold colors and clear images.
We couldn’t resist this last one. Now on the rack at Nest for all you Austen fans.

We recently received several new books that happily shout, “Summertime!”
Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream at Home is indeed splendid. Her flavor combinations are unique and ingenious. Roasted Strawberry Buttermilk, Sweet Basil & Honeyed Pine Nuts, and Sweet Corn & Black Raspberry are a few that have caught our attention. With clear directions and common ingredients, Jeni makes it easy to impress your friends (and maybe yourself) with homemade artisan ice cream.
We’re all trying to consume less sugary drinks and more water. But now and then you want something interesting and different in your glass. Homemade Soda contains a myriad of recipes for fun beverages. Whether you plan to carbonate with a home carbonating machine, a siphon, seltzer, or a little DIY fermentation, this offers all sorts of flavors to tempt you. Spruce beer, effervescent raspberry white tea, and watermelon mint cordial for starters.
Put ‘em Up and Put ‘em Up Fruit are bedtime reading for a couple of us Nesties, with inspiration that propels us into the kitchen. Not sure what to do with the harvest from your garden and/or all the gorgeous food at the Farmers Market? These books teach you how to preserve all that goodness and then how to cook with your preserves. If it’s feeling like time to venture beyond strawberry jam and frozen blueberries, Put ‘em Up is likely the adventure you’re longing for.
Speaking of adventure, Backyard Foraging will have you jumping into your hiking boots and out the door. Subtitled “65 Familiar Plants You Didn’t Know You Could Eat,” it introduces you to a wonderful world of edibles in our backyards and parks.
Here’s to a delicious summer!

Our friends at Green Toys have released a few new toys for this summer!
A bright orange tractor with accompanying cart and a marvelous ferry boat with two small cars.
As always, these Green Toys are made in the USA from curbside recycled milk jugs.
There’s also a new rocketship, but it sold out too quickly for us to take its picture… more of those on the way soon!
