Happy Spring Equinox!
Daylight is increasing, daffodils and crocuses are sprouting, trees are budding, birds are singing a new song, and even little insects are coming out. It seems we’re all eagerly awaiting warmer temperatures! We’ve enjoyed the snowy, cozy, windy days, and now Spring has arrived. Pretty soon we’ll be able to start planting!
Currently at Nest we have a beautiful potting bench display featuring new and exciting gardening books, colorful garden stakes, locally-made seed bombs, and gardening shoes!
Amongst the many books on display, I am particularly enchanted by this one on the subject of creating your own herbal beauty recipes: Organic Body Care Recipes – 175 Homemade Herbal Formulas for Glowing Skin and A Vibrant Self by Stephanie Tourles.
Flipping through the pages of this lovely book evokes a feeling of holding a wealth of information – a myriad of secret recipes and potions, a feeling of lost knowledge. It’s a veritable treasure trove of Herbal concoctions and their versatile applications just waiting to be discovered, created, enjoyed. I simply love the idea of growing your own herbs and working with their properties to creating your own face creams, toners, herbal teas, aromatherapy, and more. Knowing exactly what you put on your skin and it’s origin is so gratifying. Excellent for DIYers.
Two additional books that are along the same lines are Rosemary Gladstar’s Medicinal Herbs: A Beginner’s Guide and Hands on Healing Remedies, also by Stephanie Tourles.
Whether you’re a gardener, a cook, an artist… what is your inspiration this Spring?
And for you fashion bugs out there, our clothing selection is looking particularly colorful these days! We’re very excited about Nau’s structures, Lole’s colors, Yala’s silky fabrics…
See you soon, and Happy Spring!

We’re so excited about this event!
On Thursday, January 31st, from 4-7pm, our friend Renee from PACT will be here for a trunk show to present their complete spring line of socks, undies, leggings and camisoles.
If you’re not already familiar with PACT clothing, check out our enthusiastic post from November. This season PACT’s impact project is to help start 100 urban gardens in 2013. Working with the gardening theme, this season’s prints are based on bandanas, blossoms and a workshirt plaid.
Our first spring order has already arrived at Nest, but represents only a portion of PACT’s spring offerings. Renee will have samples of ~everything~ and we will be taking special orders for items not in stock.
When you buy any PACT item that night, we’ll give you a voucher good for Cupcake Happy Hour at Great Sage – a thematically paired cupcake and cocktail! Recent flavor themes have been raspberry & lemon, mocha, and cinnamon… we can’t wait to find out what they have planned for the 31st!
Additionally, if you pre-register at info@nestnaturalhome.com, we’ll give you 10% off all your PACT purchases that night.
Fun undies and yummy cupcakes! We hope you’ll grab a girlfriend and stop by!

Sometimes you learn things from your younger siblings. Our friends at Boulder discovered PACT’s underwear and socks this summer, but we didn’t really pay much notice. Recently the Boulder folks nudged us to take another look, and wow were they right – there is so much to like about PACT!
For starters, PACT’s items are all made with organic cotton – right up Nest’s eco-minded alley. Not only that, but they source all of their organic cotton from a single farmers’ co-op in Turkey – we’re all for dealing directly with farmers instead of the commodities market! Then all of their garments are sewn in a factory just 100 miles from the farmers – an impressively small eco-footprint. As if all that weren’t enough, the folks at PACT give back in some very real ways. Every season they select an organization to highlight and support financially.
This fall PACT is supporting The Empowerment Plan in Detroit. After interviewing homeless people in the city, Veronika Scott designed a waterproof parka that converts into a sleeping bag. The Empowerment Plan hires and trains homeless women to make the parkas, which are then given away to homeless people who need them. We hope you’ll be inspired by watching this video about The Empowerment Plan. Veronika’s vision is stunningly simple, is making a concrete difference in people’s lives, and is getting noticed. We’re honored to work with PACT to support the good work she is doing in Detroit.
The season’s cause also inspires PACT’s fabric designers as they create the prints for the season. This fall/winter, the designs speak of cozy blankets, crocheted and quilted. Sometimes undies can be fun!
PACT is fun, comfy, happy, eco, fair-trade, and good at heart… just like little brother Boulder said!

Our friendly UPS and FedEx guys have been delivering our fall clothing for a few weeks now, and it’s such a delight to see the burgundies, olives, purples and teals of autumn. The textures are so different from summer clothes – luxurious, cozy, and comforting. The clothing designers continue to evolve, and it’s great to see that warm clothes can also be feminine and flattering!
(Big thanks to Lisa, our model extraordinaire!)

“If you obey all the rules, you miss all the fun.” – Katharine Hepburn
There are a lot of people out there who are eager to tell us how we should or should not dress. The media warns us to stay within the boundaries that our body and age assign us and teaches us that a successful dresser is one who can take a cold hard look at herself and then disguise what is “wrong.” For a long time, I didn’t question this notion and, therefore, never looked for clothing that made me look good or feel happy and special. Instead, I looked for what wouldn’t make me seem unaware of my own shortcomings. Changing my attitude on this matter actually made a big difference, not only in how I shop, but also in how I feel about myself.
Over time, I’ve learned from my customers that when you approach it with an open, creative spirit, finding clothing that makes you feel like your best self can actually be a joy rather than a chore. There’s something really transformative and empowering about ignoring what you think you know about yourself, falling in love with something unexpected and then making it your own.
While tidying the racks at Nest recently, I noticed a beautiful billowy black dress from one of our newest vendors, Nau. I loved how soft the fabric was (organic cotton and tencel), and how it was simple yet architectural and elegant. I never wear dresses without defined waists. I also never wear anything that will draw attention to my legs and thighs. I put the dress back. “Not me,” I thought. Nonetheless, I kept thinking about the dress. I wondered what it would look like if I wore it with heels or flats or a scarf or long earrings. Finally, to satisfy my curiosity, I suspended my disbelief for a second and tried the dress on. For a few minutes it looked neither good nor bad. It just looked….different. Then slowly I began to envision myself as the type of person who would wear something wonderfully short and loose. The idea was exciting.
Wearing my new dress out that weekend felt like celebrating a private graduation. As insignificant as it may have been, I had gone from feeling insecure and limited by something to proudly wearing it. If you think about it this way, dressing is kind of a great stepping stone for bigger ventures in life. Not everything we try on is going to suit us, but when we are willing to experiment and think creatively, a world of possibilities can open up.
Josie’s tips for fearless shopping
- Stay away from magazines, tv and blogs that dole out shame and judgment. Instead, find inspiration in media that encourages creativity and self expression. I love blogs that catalog and celebrate creative street fashion. Scott Schuman’s “The Satorialist” and Lisa Warninger’s “Urban Weeds” are two of my favorites.
- Every season I encourage myself to be on the lookout for one “foolish item.” I forget about the preferences that narrow my vision and start to see other colors and shapes that I never considered before. When I’m unfamiliar with the style I’m trying on, I take lots of sizes into the dressing room and consider different ways I could wear it. Finally, if I’m still digging it, I think about how I could transform the new item into something that feels like me and not a costume.
- Avoid shopping with friends who aren’t likely to support and encourage you when you want to try something different. Instead, shop with friends who are open to new possibilities and creative solutions. I love trying things on with Nest sales associate Lisa in tow. I can always count on her to see potential in things I never would have considered. If you don’t have a Lisa, consult the store’s sales associates, they have lots of experience helping customers and a fresh perspective on what you may or may not like to wear. Plus, if you’re at Nest you may get the actual Lisa!

Last fall we discovered Imagine Greenwear and introduced some of their baby clothes at Nest. Now it’s time to introduce their women’s clothing.
The folks at Imagine Greenwear have developed a seaweed-based dying system that is clean and green. Their colors actually fuse with the organic cotton fabric, instead of being applied to the surface, which means that the fabric remains soft and the colors will not fade. Greenwear’s method uses little energy, reduces the amount of waste due to color run-off, and leaves no toxic residues on the garment.
This season’s women’s tops are bold and artsy. Inspired by nature, the designs are uniquely gorgeous. The cuts are feminine and flattering, while also being deliciously comfortable.
In addition to all that goodness, we consider it a super-bonus that Imagine Greenwear is based in Fairfax, VA, and all their manufacturing is done in the U.S.
